Seaweed Farming: A Boon for Kenyan Coastal Communities
The coastal villages of Kenya, once reliant on traditional agriculture, are increasingly turning to seaweed farming as a sustainable and resilient livelihood. Driven by climate change and the growing global demand for seaweed products, this emerging industry is offering hope and economic opportunities to local communities.
Seaweed farming, introduced to Kenya in 2008, has rapidly expanded to cover 20 coastal villages. The practice has proven to be particularly beneficial for communities affected by climate change, including rising sea levels and unpredictable rainfall patterns.
Villages like Kibuyuni have witnessed significant improvements in infrastructure and electricity access as a result of investments in seaweed farming. The Seaweed Farmers’ Cooperative in Kibuyuni employs over 100 households, empowering women like Tima Jasho to support their families and improve their living conditions.
“If you grow seaweed, you don’t have to depend on a man,” Jasho said. “I can earn my own money.”
The global market for seaweed has experienced substantial growth in recent years, driven by its diverse applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. In 2022, Kenya produced nearly 100 tons of seaweed, generating over $30,000 in revenue. The country exports dried seaweed to various countries, including China, France, and the United States.
While Kenya has made significant strides in seaweed farming, it still lags behind neighboring countries like Tanzania, which has established a more mature industry. However, with continued investment and support, Kenya has the potential to become a major player in the global seaweed market.
