President Mahama outlined a comprehensive strategy to bolster Ghana’s aquaculture sectors at the State of the Nation Address.

His speech highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing productivity, sustainability, and self-sufficiency, with a particular focus on supporting farmers and fisherfolk.

Aquaculture Development: A Key Focus

President Mahama emphasized the importance of aquaculture development as a cornerstone of his administration’s agricultural policy.

He announced plans to provide financial and technical support to young fish farmers, aiming to increase fish production and reduce dependence on fish imports.

The government will also encourage the establishment of fish processing facilities, creating jobs and boosting exports.

Additionally, programs to empower female fish processors and traders with financial capital and capacity-building initiatives will be implemented, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to gender equality in the sector.

Combating Illegal Fishing

The President addressed the critical issue of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, which threatens marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of fisherfolk.

He highlighted the intensified surveillance and monitoring operations, supported by modern technology and strengthened collaboration with key stakeholders.

The expansion of subsidized premixed fuel supply to artisanal and industrial fishers was also announced, ensuring affordability and availability.

Investing in Infrastructure

To improve post-harvest handling and reduce losses, the government will invest in modern fish landing sites and cold storage facilities.

These investments aim to enhance the quality of fish products and support the overall growth of the aquaculture sector.

Supporting Farmers

Beyond aquaculture, President Mahama outlined initiatives to support farmers facing challenges in accessing mechanization, quality seeds, fertilizer, and extension services.

The establishment of flagship farmer service centers in every agricultural district will ensure that farmers receive essential mechanization services and resources to improve productivity and efficiency.
