Kenya Seeks to Elevate Tea Brand Globally
Kenya, a global tea powerhouse, is embarking on a mission to further elevate its tea brand on the international stage. The recent centennial celebration of commercial tea production in Kenya highlighted the country’s rich tea heritage and its potential for future growth.
Despite facing challenges such as quality control issues and market fluctuations, Kenyan tea remains highly sought-after worldwide. The government is now focusing on revitalizing the marketing strategy to ensure that Kenyan tea is accessible and appreciated in every corner of the globe.
A key initiative is the establishment of an annual state-funded tea marketing mission. This initiative aims to target key markets and promote Kenyan tea through various marketing strategies, including product demonstrations, tastings, and partnerships with local businesses.
The Kenyan tea sector has witnessed significant growth in recent years, with export earnings reaching Sh180 billion in 2023. However, the industry has also faced challenges, including unsold tea stocks at the Mombasa Tea Auction. To address these issues, the government is prioritizing quality control, value-addition, and sustainable production practices.
Smallholder farmers, who form the backbone of the Kenyan tea industry, are crucial to the sector’s success. The government must continue to support them through initiatives such as fertilizer subsidies and access to modern technology. Additionally, investing in research and development is essential to identify new tea varieties and improve production techniques.
By focusing on quality, innovation, and sustainable practices, Kenya can further strengthen its position as a leading tea-producing nation and capture a larger share of the global tea market.
